Repair It or Replace It? The Secret Formula for Your AC Problems.

Day & Night Heating & Air Conditioning Company • Aug 30, 2016

Most of us have encountered some type of problem with our air conditioner. Whether it’s adding refrigerant every summer, your AC runs nonstop, or your energy bills have been getting higher and higher. This may have us wondering if we should repair or replace it? The secret formula to this is actually a lot easier than you might expect.

The Secret Formula for Replacement

It’s called the $5,000 rule. Here’s how it works:

  • Take the age of your unit and multiply it by the amount of your last repair bill. (Example: 11 years x $700 = $7,700)
  • If your total is less than $5,000 then it’s worth it to repair.
  • If your total is more than $5,000 then you should consider replacing your unit.

Sure Signs Your AC Is on Its Deathbed

As your air conditioner ages, it will have trouble keeping your home cool. Here are some signs that your system is on its last leg:

  • AC is over 10 years old
  • AC runs nonstop
  • Utility bills are rising
  • House is humid
  • AC needs Freon every season

If you notice three or more of these symptoms, it may make financial sense to replace your air conditioner sooner rather than later.
